Equiano Subsea Cable Project

The FIRST-EVER virtual Google for Africa! was quite captivating -

Starting with Nitin Gajria, MD-SSA revealing that, research shows that for every 10% increase in broadband penetration, GDP increases by 1.4%, also sharing insights Google’s infrastructure plan for AFRICA via the Equiano Subsea Cable Project, aimed to connect AFRICA with EUROPE, for about 20x more network capacity, which will also predictively make internet prices drop to about 21%, and specifically, Nigeria might experience 5x increase in speed.

Equiano Subsea Cable Project was named after Olaudah Equiano, known for most of his life as Gustavus Vassa, was a writer and abolitionist from, according to his memoir, the Eboe region of the Kingdom of Benin.

The project will create about 1.7 million jobs between 2022 - 2025, for both Nigeria and South Africa.

So the question is not whether a full life cycle of skills support for young people in Africa needs to be created, but when. Africa Code Week says: NOW.
