WHAT PERCENTAGE (%) IS NIGERIA’S INTERNET PENETRATION RATE (IPR)?

My post on the 6th August 2022 generated some great responses and reactions, as the case may be. The post gained a good number of reshares, and also awesome insights and comments - many thanks.

For clarification, let's start with the first question - How many Nigerians are online, or connected to the internet?

The total population in Nigeria was estimated at 206.14 million people in 2020, according to the latest census figures and projections from Trading Economics.

So, for the sake of analysis let’s stick to the average figure of 206 million in total population.

Now, how many people are connected to the internet out of the 206 million population?

First, let's double-check if the numbers are connecting.

According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), active internet subscription by technology (July 2021 - June 2022), a total of 151,021,062

https://www.ncc.gov.ng/statistics-reports/industry-overview#view-graphs-tables-5

This average will get us to about 73% IPR.

Well, according to the Internet World Stats, Nigeria’s IPR is at 73%.

We will stick to the NCC’s value of 151,021,062 because of the NIN-SIM linkage initiative. This validates the case for unique user statistics.

Out of 151,021,062 users, over 35 million people are on Facebook & Instagram, over 5 million people are on LinkedIn, and interestingly enough, times websites like Bet9ja quarterly traffic attracts over 75 million people, and more at peak periods.

So, traction from Google Trends is significant enough to pay attention to, for analysis and forecast in Nigeria.

Thank you.

Africa Code Week 2017

Over the next 25 years, Africa’s working-age population will double to one billion, exceeding that of China and India. In the meantime, the digital skills gap is widening: while coding has the power to put millions of young Africans on the path to successful careers and empower them to build sustainable growth, companies in Africa are currently struggling to hire enough qualified IT talent. So the question is not whether a full life cycle of skills support for young people in Africa needs to be created, but when. Africa Code Week says: NOW.
